Isaiah 14:12

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”

Who is this “ Lucifer “ character mentioned in Isaiah 14:12 ?? One of the most common misconceptions among Bible believers is that Lucifer is another name for Satan, based on a single occurrence of the word … the King James translation of Isaiah 14:12, which reads...

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

However the name "Lucifer" does not exist in the Hebrew text, nor the Greek translation (The Septuagint), but was derived from Jerome’s 4th century AD translation of this verse into Latin. Lucifer is a Latin name, which could not exist in a Hebrew manuscript, written before Latin even existed.

I know, I know, I’m guilty of it too. But, I don’t believe this was done on purpose.

The KJV translators simply borrowed the name from Jerome's translation of the Bible. Note however that Jerome was not in error. Lucifer which means "light-bearer", was the fourth century Latin name for the planet Venus, which reaches its maximum brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, for which reason it has been known as the Morning Star or Evening Star. As “Morning Star” Venus heralds daylight.

The Hebrew term translated in the KJV as “O Lucifer, son of the morning” is Helel ben Shahar.. literally ‘Helel son of Shahar’. In the Babylonian / Canaanite religions, Helel which means to shine or to bear light, and Shalim, the god of dusk were twin brothers... sons of Shahar, the god of the dawn. Hence ‘Helel son of Shahar’

So what led me to this? Simply wondering about what names are used in the Bible for what we commonly refer to as: “ planets. “

Origin

Middle English: from Old French planete, from late Latin planeta, planetes, from Greek planētēs‘wanderer, planet,’ from planan ‘wander.’ The literal definition of “ planet ” ( s ) means: WANDERER.

Draco (the Dragon) The Serpent Cast Out. Draco is a great dragon that has been cast out. Draco in Greek means "Trodden On". The Hebrew is Darach (To Tread). Psalm 91:13 speaks of this "...the dragon shalt thou trample under feet." (KJV) One of the stars in the head of Draco is named Rastaban (The Head of the Subtle) or in Arabic, Al Waid (Who Is to Be Destroyed). Other stars include Ethanin (The Long Serpent), Thuban (The Subtle),Giansar (The Punished Enemy) and El Atik (The Fraudulent) The serpent cast out, ( the ol’ red dragon ) & his ⅓ of the angels - the fallen angels, left, or were cast from their first estate. They in effect, ‘’ STRAYED “ { or } adj. Strayed. “ Wandering, astray “

Stray, Strayed… I’m not real big on supposed quotes, especially non-biblical sources. But the late comedian Lenny Bruce once said: ““Every day people are straying away from the church and going back to God.” This leads us ( me - anyways ), right into the book of: Jude. It just seems a logical next step. Why, you ask? ( well, I asked anyways ) satan / Lucifer / ol’ red dragon etc., Fallen angels, Can all be equated to: ‘’ wanders.’’ Those who did [not] come forth at their appointed times.

The main point of: The book of Jude, was a focus on FALSE TEACHERS AND FALSE PROPHETS, “who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ” (Jude 1:4b) meaning they engaged in sexual immorality in their religious practices and that’s about as perverted as you can get. The interesting thing is these “people have crept in unnoticed” (Jude 1:4a) and unseen so that they can more easily do their twisting and distorting of the truth. Jude gives them about as strong of a warning as possible by writing that it is “just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire” (Jude 1:7). This “eternal fire” will be the final place for the unrepentant “grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage” (Jude 1:16).

Jude 1:13

Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Jude continues the [nautical theme] begun in verse 12 by calling the false ministers "raging waves of the sea." He describes them as storms in the church, causing trouble and turbulence wherever they go. James describes the doubting person in a similar way (James 1:6-8), as wind-tossed waves, double-minded, and unstable in everything. Such people will end up causing problems. Such waves toss people into hidden rocks, or as his brother Jude puts it, hidden reefs. Naive members can become caught in the turbulence and eventually be turned from the truth.

He then describes them as "foaming up their own shame." It is quite a picturesque phrase. He alludes to the foam on the beach after a storm. The strand is littered with all kinds of driftwood and other debris a storm can dredge up. They brag about their past feats as great accomplishments, but a godly eye sees them for what they are: shameful deeds.

He also calls them "wandering stars," another nautical allusion, this time to the movement of the planets. Mariners used the fixed stars - not the planets - to guide their ships over the trackless sea. They would align themselves toward a certain star to reach their destination. These teachers are supposed to be leaders, guides for those who are not as experienced on the road of life, but as we would say, they are all over the map! They go here and there, this way and that. It is the blind leading the blind, and anyone following them will fall into a ditch (Matthew 15:14). They are unreliable guides. They give horrible advice. They are not worth even talking to about one's problems because they will lead a person astray.

Jude foretells their fate at the end of the verse: "for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever." The literal translation of this is really dark: "Their fate is the utter darkness of darkness for eternity." Lights out forever! James 3:1 says that those who are teachers will receive the stricter judgment, and this is an example of it: the utter darkness of darkness forever. God takes the deception of His people personally.

Genesis Chapter 1

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry [land] appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry [land] Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that [it was] good.

The famous first verse of the Bible says, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen 1:1). At this time, everything in the universe, including the planets in our solar system were created. Man could see 5 of the 8 planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, not counting Earth) from the very beginning with the naked eye.

For thousands of years, though, planets were thought by men to be stars. "Planets" got their name when scientists and astronomers began to notice that certain "stars" had apparent motion through the constellations of fixed stars, thus they were named "planets" meaning "wandering stars."

There is no definitive proof as to when each of these first 5 planets was first discovered to be a planet. However, it appears that Venus may have been discovered by the Sumerians as early as 1500 B.C. Evidence shows that by the 6th century B.C., the Babylonians had a great deal of astrological knowledge. They were likely the first to name the 5 visible planets.

In the 1st century B.C., the Greeks greatly enhanced the astrological findings of the Babylonians, and renamed the planets after the Greek and Roman gods of their time. However, they mistakenly believed that the planets circled the Earth. It wasn't until 1514 that Copernicus refuted this theory by proposing that the Earth, as well as the other planets, revolved around the sun. When Galileo later defended this theory, based on his findings after the invention of the telescope in 1608, he was convicted of heresy in 1633 by the Roman Catholic Church and placed under house arrest for the rest of his life!

The other 3 planets were not discovered until many years later: Uranus (1781), Neptune (1846), and Pluto (1930)(Pluto is no longer considered a planet). It should also be noted that the Earth itself was not accepted to be a planet until about the 17th century.

Of course, God has always known that the planets existed, but the Bible does not specifically single out planets (although the KJV Bible uses the word "worlds" in (Heb 1:2)(Heb 11:3)). They are counted as objects in the "heavens" which is mentioned numerous times in the Bible.

It is interesting to keep in mind, however, that the Bible mentions the Earth as being circle in shape (Isa 40:22)(written in app. 700 B.C.) WELL before this was scientifically known, and that the stars were uncountable (Jer 33:22)(Gen 15:5) when it was believed there were about 1000 stars. http://jesusalive.cc/ques160.htm Job

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. Vega ("He Shall Be Exalted"), Procyon("The Redeemer"), Pollux ("He Who Comes to Suffer"); The names of the stars speak of the Messiah, Jesus!

The stars are awesome evidence of God's work. It appears that God had an additional purpose in the stars. When you closely examine the names of the stars and constellations, it appears they tell an important story of salvation.

For example, among the brightest stars seen from the earth are Vega which means He Shall Be Exalted, Procyon which means The Redeemer and Polluxwhich means He Who Comes to Suffer.

Although the information presented here cannot be substantiated except by the star and constellation names themselves, there does appear to be an incredible "coincidence" that the names and pictures of the stars and their constellations should completely and without modification fit the Biblical account.

Scripture doesn't speak much about the stars and their use in describing God's plans. We do know that God created and named the stars (Gen 1:14, Psalm 147:4). It seems reasonable that He might have used the stars as an eternal sign to man of His salvation plan. It also seems reasonable that Satan would try to pervert God's sign by introducing ‘’Astrology’’ -- which has obscured all other meanings. After all, that’s what satan does. He lies. Isaiah Chapter 47

11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, [which] thou shalt not know.

12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [these things] that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, [nor] fire to sit before it.

Jesus called him out straight away in John 8:44 ! It’s interesting how a simple study on planets in the Bible turns out! Especially, considering I tried to avoid the usual roman /greek
