Whatever happened to humility?

Works of the flesh (and) SELF IMPORTANCE….

Humility : “the state of being humble.” Both (humility) and (humble) have their origin in the Latin word- (humilis), meaning "low." ( by degree..) ... When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Habukkuk 2:15~ Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, (that thou mayest look on their nakedness) ! (( And yes, it 'actually' say's that. )) It is speaking of doing so, in order to gain advantage of, or take advantage of another.

….Galatians 5:19-21….

Now the works of the flesh are manifest.

—There is no need for elaborate disquisition to illustrate what is (meant) by fulfilling the lust of the flesh.

The effects in which the flesh produces, are plain and obvious enough.

The catalog which follows is not drawn up on any exact scientific principle,

but divides itself roughly under four heads:

(1) sins of sensuality;

(2) sins of superstition;

(3) sins of temper;

(4) excesses.

It has been said that all our sinfulness may be resolved -

into two elementary instincts:

the instinct of self-preservation (and) the reproductive instinct...

The third class of sins— sins of temper—

would be referred to the first of the heads; sins (of) sensuality and excess—

the one immediately, the other more remotely—to the second.

The sins of "superstition" mentioned are of a more secondary character,

and arise out of intellectual errors.

Galatians 5:19-21, “Works”, in the 'plural' sense….

Works of the flesh ( to which the Galatians ) were most inclined, and those parts of the fruit of the Spirit of which they stood in the greatest need;

Adultery — A crime to be considered in the first rank of enormities,

as being the most prejudicial to society,

destroying conjugal happiness,

introducing confusion and ruin into families,

alienating the affection of parents from their children, causing them to neglect their education. How - you may ask? By placing a greater importance on those acts governed by the flesh, rather than being (home) utilizing "teachable moments". Psalm 199:12 say's (ask's) to "Teach my thy statutes, LORD.." (In other words), thy laws. Teach me thy statutes - Make me more and more acquainted with a law so pure, so rich, so valuable. Are 'we' not to learn these values, and then "teach" them to our children? Yes, we are... But we can hardly do so if we are pre-occupied with works of the flesh. To original corruption (all ) have added actual sin. The ruin of the young is either living by no rule at all, or choosing false rules: let them walk by Scripture rules. Deuteronomy 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Fornication —

Which, how light soever heathen may make it, is in the sight of GOD a very grievous offence;

Uncleanness —

Of every kind and degree;

Lasciviousness —

All immodesty, as the indulging of wanton thoughts, and reading lascivious books.

The Greek word means any thing, inward or outward, that is (contrary) to chastity;

Idolatry — The worshipping of idols; this sin is justly reckoned among the works of the flesh, because the worship paid to many of the gods consisted in the most impure fleshly gratifications;

Witchcraft — Or sorcery, as φαρμακεια, observing, that the expression

“being placed immediately after idolatry", means those arts of incantation and charming, and all the pretended communications

with invisible and malignant powers,

whereby the heathen priests promoted the reverence and worship of their idol gods, and enriched (themselves).

(Revelation 18:23,) εν τη φαρμακεια σου,

By thy sorcery were all nations deceived; that is, by a variety of wicked arts

and cheats, the nations were deluded to support Babylon in her idolatries

and corruptions.

Hatred — Or enmities, as εχθραι signifies; 1 John 3:15 “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.”

Variance — Ερεις, strifes; contention.

Emulations — Transports of ill-placed and ill-proportioned zeal; effort to match or surpass a person or achievement, typically by imitation; envious rivalry.

Wrath — Θυμοι, resentments;

εριθειαι, contentions, as the word appears here to signify; anger, punishment, (un-justified in this case). {leave the wrath to GOD..}

Seditions — Or divisions, in domestic or civil matters; heresies

— Parties formed in religious communities; who, instead of maintaining

true candor and benevolence, renounce and condemn each other.

Envyings — Frequently manifesting themselves against the prosperity

and success of others.

An Awful declaration !

Some of the works here mentioned are wrought principally, if not entirely,

in the mind, and yet they are called works of the flesh.

Hence it is clear that the apostle does not mean by definition, “the flesh”,

the body, or sensual appetites and inclinations only,

but the corruption of human nature, as it spreads

through all the powers of the soul, as well as the members of the body;

of which I tell you before — Before the event; I forewarn you;

as I have told you also in time past —

When I was present with you; that they who do such things —

Who are guilty of such evil practices;

shall not inherit the kingdom of GOD

— Whatever zeal they may pretend for the [externals of religion],

in any of the forms of it.

WHY DO WE DO IT??

Narcissist?

Some tend to place a higher value of worth on themselves or another.

(excessive interest in or admiration of themselves.)

What about ( those that seem to have),

or ‘think’ more of ‘’material wealth or possessions”?

Friendship in and of the world is governed by self-interest...

To despise a man for his employment or appearance is a sin?

1 Corinthians 3:19

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.

For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

Let us seek instead, the fountain of life, that we may escape the snares of death.

Let all that wish well to the kingdom of CHRIST, do what they can,

that many may be added to HIS church.

To oppress the poor is to reproach our Creator.

The wicked man has his soul forced from him; he dies in his sins,

under the guilt and power of them. But godly men, (though they have pain),

and some dread of death, have the blessed hope, which GOD,

who cannot lie, has given them.

The Great King who reigns over heaven and earth,

will reward faithful servants who honor HIS gospel by the proper discharge

of the duties of their stations:

HE despises not the services of the lowest.

Proverbs 14:20-26

20The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends. 21He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. 22Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good. 23In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lipstendeth only to penury. 24The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly. 25A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies. 26In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

*(Penury- extreme poverty; destitution.)

The poor is hated even of his own neighbor. —This sad experience of life is repeated in Proverbs 19:7.

All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

The poor is hated — That is, despised and abandoned,

as hateful persons and things are; of his own neighbor —

Strictly so called of persons nearest to him, either by habitation or relation,

and therefore most obliged to love and help him;

but the rich hath many friends — As matter of fact, by daily shows.

Every one is ready to make court to those whom the world smiles upon, though otherwise unworthy.

Such, however, are not so much friends to the rich as to their riches,

hoping to get some benefit by them.

There is little friendship in the world but what is governed by self- interest,

which is no true friendship at all; nor what a wise man will value himself upon, or put any confidence in.

What is the corrective of this selfish tendency of mankind?

Living by the Spirit ! !

(Galatians 5:16-25)

16This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Justified by Faith Romans 3:21-31

21But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 29Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: 30Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Philippians Chapter 2

1 If [there be] therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, [being] of one accord, of one mind.

3 [Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

1 John Chapter 5

1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Romans 13:10

Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Fulfilling of the law. —The form of the Greek word implies (not only) that love [helps] a man to fulfill the law, but that in (the fact of) the presence of love in his heart the law is actually fulfilled. Love worketh no ill ... - Love would seek to do him good, of course it would. It would assist to prevent all dishonesty and crime toward others. Therefore ... - "Because" love does no harm to another, it is "therefore" the fulfilling of the Law, (implying) [that all that the Law requires] is to "love" others.
